Former education professor Henry Frierson to be honored by SPGRE

Henry Frierson will be honored at a banquet in Chapel Hill this weekend for his work in founding the Summer Pre-Graduate Research Experience (SPGRE) program at UNC-Chapel Hill and directing it for 19 years. The program will celebrate its 20th anniversary July 24-26.

Gerald Unks receives Class of 2008 faculty award, delivers "Last Lecture"

Gerald Unks, professor of social foundations of education, has been selected as the recipient of the Class of 2008 distinguished faculty award. The award will be presented by senior class president Ashley Shores at the Senior Send-off, Wednesday evening, April 23, on Polk Place. Upon receiving the award, Unks will deliver the Last Lecture to the Class of 2008.

Madeleine Grumet receives Willystine Goodsell award

Madeleine Grumet was awarded the 2008 Willystine Goodsell Award March 25, 2008 in New York City for her outstanding scholarship, activism and community building on behalf of women, girls and education. The award is presented annually by the American Educational Research Association (AERA) to a person who has made a significant contribution to women and education.

Pat Shane elected national president of NSTA

Pat Shane, Associate Director of the Center for Mathematics and Science Education (CMSE) and Clinical Professor of Science Education at the School, recently was elected the 2009-2010 president of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). Shane will serve a three-year term beginning in June 1, 2008. She will first assume the position of president-elect followed by president in 2009-2010 and then past-president in 2010-2011.
