Welcome
From your Alumni Council president
Welcome to another exciting year for the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education! As president of your Alumni Council, I am privileged to have this opportunity to share some thoughts with you.
The national search for the next dean of the School of Education is progressing well. The search committee hopes to have a new dean in place in the fall of 2008. The committee values your input, and I encourage you to share your thoughts with committee members regarding the qualities that are important in our next dean. Please submit your ideas and suggestions to the committee staff person, Jo Bass, at jbass@email.unc.edu; enter “School of Education” in the subject line.
At the same time, Interim Dean Jill Fitzgerald is pursuing an aggressive agenda for the School of Education with the recent selection of four new assistant professors, searches under way to fill four additional faculty positions, strategies to dramatically increase the number of teacher education graduates, pursuit of new grants to support research initiatives and the identification of new ways to utilize technology to reshape the delivery of instruction to students. While the search for a new dean progresses, the School of Education is moving forward under the very capable leadership of Dr. Fitzgerald.
We are also fortunate to have an outstanding team directing the activities of your Alumni Council. Dr. David A. (Gus) Martin is immediate past president, having served us well for the past two years as president. Dr. Eliz Colbert is our president-elect, having just completed a term as treasurer. A former principal, Eliz is now the senior director for professional development for Wake County Schools. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from our School of Education and a doctoral degree from Teachers College in New York City.
There are many ways you can become engaged with your alma mater, including mentoring a new teacher or principal in your area, hosting an event in your locale, participating in School of Education events, nominating someone for an alumni award and many more. The External Relations staff is eager to assist you in becoming involved. For more information, contact Director of Alumni Relations Laurie Norman, laurie_norman@unc.edu or (919) 843-6979.
It’s going to be another great year at Peabody Hall and for the Alumni Association. Jump in and grab a job. We need you.
Mike Williams (A.B.Ed. ’67, Ed.D. ’92)
President, Alumni Council
