Zollie Stevenson, Jr. (Ph.D. '84) selected for Harvey E. Beech Award

Zollie Stevenson, Jr., director of Student Achievement and School Accountability (SASA) programs at the U.S. Department of Education, will receive the 2008 Harvey E. Beech Outstanding Alumnus Award from the UNC-Chapel Hill Black Alumni Reunion. The award will be presented Nov. 7 at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center on the UNC campus.

Cindi Rigsbee (A.B.Ed. '79, M.Ed. '03) named North Carolina Teacher of the Year

Cindi Rigsbee, a sixth- and seventh-grade reading resource teacher at Gravelly Hill Middle School in Orange County, was named the 2008-2009 North Carolina Teacher of the Year. The award was presented April 29, 2008, at a banquet in Raleigh.

Kelley Dull (M.Ed. '02) named 2008 ASCA School Counselor of the Year semi-finalist

Kelley Dull, who received her master’s degree in School Counseling from the School of Education in 2002, has been named a semi-finalist for the 2008 School Counselor of the Year Award from the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). 

George B. Forsythe (MACT '77, Ph.D. '84) named president of Westminster College

George B. Forsythe, who received both his master’s degree in college teaching and doctoral degree in Higher and Adult Education from the School of Education, recently was named the 20th president of Westminster College in Fulton, Mo.

Zollie Stevenson, a 1984 graduate from the School of Education’s Ph.D. program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, recently was named the director of Student Achievement and School Accountability (SASA) programs for the U.S. Department of Education. 

Recent doctoral graduate publishes dissertation as book

John Tharp, a 2007 graduate of the School’s doctoral program in Educational Leadership, recently published a book titled Breaking the Cycle of Failed School Reform: What Five Failed Reforms Tell Us. The book is based on the dissertation that he completed while at the School under the guidance of professors Fenwick English, Kathleen Brown and Neil Shipman.
